Abstract

This essay examines the poetics of space in Emily Dickinson’s poetry from three interconnected dimensions: cognitive construction of space, innovative visual poetic form, and material carrier of envelope poems. From the cognitive level of poetic content, Dickinson infuses boundless spiritual profundity into physically restricted carriers such as houses and coffins, breaking the inherent bondage of physical size via imaginative cognition and turning confined entities into gateway toward eternity. In terms of visual poetic form, her use of dashes, irregular line breaks and title-free layout fractures linear temporal logic, constructing multi-layered textual space and independent spiritual dimensions on the page. Regarding material practice, Dickinson consciously opens, cuts, and completely flattens envelopes into new shapes, transforming their constrained physical space into a dynamic compositional field where material boundaries actively shape and are shaped by the handwritten lines. By embedding expansive perception within limited poetic and physical spaces, Dickinson reveals spatial constraint as an advantageous condition for poetic infinite interpretation.
